BMA Bringing Late Night Comedy and Second City to BMA14

Tim Washer, Senior Marketing Manager, Social Media, at Cisco Systems, who will give a firestarter talk late Wednesday, May 28, titled, “Late Night Comedy Meets Corporate Storytelling,” is by training a comedian and comedy writer and earlier in his career worked as an actor and writer for “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

Steve Young, a longtime writer for “The Late Show with David Letterman,” became fascinated by the mostly b2b-oriented “industrial musicals” of the 1950s-1970s and recently published a namesake book on the subject, and he has been on the show (a rarity for a writer) twice with David Letterman. Steve will give a firestarter talk Thursday afternoon, May 29, titled “A Retro Moment in Marketing History.”

Of course, Second City’s heralded corporate entertainment unit, Second City Communications (SCC), has been staging fundamentally b2b-focused performances—perhaps in a way the successors to industrial musicals—for years. On Thursday morning, May 29, an SCC troupe will perform a sketch spoofing                (well, Gary Slack says we can’t tell you).

BMA Announces More Details About May 28 BM14 Gala at the Art Institute

Griffin Court PhotoBMA14’s networking gala on Wednesday evening, May 28, at the Art Institute of Chicago will be conference attendees’ #1 networking opportunity while in Chicago.

Just six blocks north on Michigan Avenue—walkable or reachable by buses leaving the Hilton every 15 minutes starting at 6 pm—the Art Institute is one of Chicago’s grandest institutions and a perfect gathering place for a creative profession like ours.

Our event will be in the towering Griffin Court inside the Institute’s new Modern Wing, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. Weather permitting, we also will have access to the adjacent, tree-lined Pritzker Garden.

BMA Posts Demo Video Explaining How BMA14 Audience Polling System Will Work

Barry Seidenstat Profile PhotoLivecube, the event technology service that BMA announced a few weeks ago it would be deploying at BMA14, will be the tool that selected BMA14 speakers and panel moderators use to solicit audience feedback on questions relevant to each session.

Instead of attendees being given a wireless response pad, as BMA did at BLAZE last year, BMA14 attendees will be able to access and respond to any audience questions posed by presenters via the Livecube system on their smartphones, tablets and/or laptops.

Those presenters who choose to use the Livecube polling system will cue up multiple choice and true-false questions on the screen behind them and give audience members several seconds to respond, A while later, you will then see the cumulative audience responses displayed on backdrop screen in chart or table form.

Given the size of the expected BMA14 turnout—900+ b2b marjeters from 420+ companies and as many as 45 states and 13 nations—BMA believes the sample size will be sufficient for the information collected to be published afterwards as “new b2b marketing knowledge,” according to Gary Slack, BMA’s VP of Professional Development and BMA14 organizer.

All BMA14 attendees will receive a consolidated polling report within 2-3 weeks of the conference, and the full findings will be available around the same time at www.marketing.org.

BMA Adds Prime Time Session at BMA14 for Noted Social Seller Jill Rowley

Jill Rowley Profile Photo Due to the high interest in the concept of “social selling,” BMA is adding a second BMA14 session, a 15-minite firestarter, for noted social seller Jill Rowley, from 9:00-9:15 am on Thursday, May 29.

Rowley, who honed her social selling savvy at Salesforce.com, Eloqua and, most recently, Oracle, also is leading a 45-minute pre-conference session from 9:00-9:45 am on Wednesday, May 28.

Both talks will focus on the “ABCs of Social Selling,” in which she will describe how firms like IBM, ADP, Thomson Reuters, GE, Oracle and others are teaching their sales teams to leverage social networks to sell.

Rowley recently was profiled in a Forbes article titled, “Meet the Top 30 Social Salespeople in the World.”
